The Brain Has No Backup Tank

Unlike muscles or the liver, the brain does not store energy for later use. It relies entirely on what is available in the bloodstream at any given moment.

That means the brain lives on supply, not savings.

When fuel delivery is smooth, the brain feels clear and steady. When fuel delivery is volatile, the brain feels it immediately.


Glucose: A Fragile Fuel for the Brain

The brain can use glucose, and it does so readily. But glucose availability is tightly tied to insulin.

After a sugar-heavy meal, insulin rises, glucose is cleared from the blood, and ketone production is shut down. If glucose then drops quickly — which it often does — the brain can find itself temporarily under-fueled.
